Hayfork Community Wetlands

The Hayfork Community Wetlands is a 20-acre wetland site next to Hayfork High School. Mining operations during the 1920-1940s stripped the area of vegetation and created massive tailing piles. The Watershed Center, in concert with our partners, have spent the last several years rehabilitating the site to create a new outdoor community space and thriving wetlands ecosystem.

The wetlands provide habitat for migrating birds, mammals, and amphibians. They also contribute to the overall health of Hayfork Creek, acting as a natural water filtering system. The wetlands are a beautiful addition to our local outdoor community space, offering an interpretive trail system and serving as an outdoor classroom for local school groups.

Community volunteer planting days have been an important part of re-vegetating the site.

This project was made possible through the participation of local residents, agencies, schools, and community members who assisted with planting, trail building, and contributing to the interpretive trail system by incorporating art and building projects created by Hayfork High School students.
